Chic-spiration: Pattern Layering in the Home

Mixing and combining patterns in an outfit has become so common that  it hardly turns heads when done well. Layering bold, complementary patterns in the home, particularly on a single piece of furniture, is less common,. Let alone, it is an intimidating project for the amateur designer. I tend to choose neutral colors for the large (i.e expensive) furniture pieces, and then layer colors with accessories, throws, pillows, etc.

However, recently I saw a two tone sofa on Design*Sponge that had me rethinking patterned furniture. The two fabrics complement each other as a graphic neutral, but create a major statement. The trend goes a bit further with these layered patterns from Oh Joy! which incorporate bold color and large scale pattern. The latter route would require more coordination in terms of a full scale makeover, but I would love to redo the center cushions of my couch in a gold ikat pattern, pulling out the gold threads of my vino red rug.  Now I just need the fabric, a hefty staple gun, and the DIY upholstery knowledge.

Would you layer patterns in your own home, or do you already choose bold hues in interior design?

  1. I love the color!!! In the middle of a gray winter a splash of color could only lift everyone’s spirit. I saw a new trend that kitchens were moving away from the cold stark steel to whimsical fun colors

  3. I love these pics and I also love the idea of layering patterns, but it has to be the right mix and balance of both colour and print.

    Have a fantastic weekend sweetpea!
